Holiday Inn Express in Sturgis, South Dakota:

Staying in or around Sturgis during the time of the annual motorcycle rally is always a risky proposition for anyone hoping to achieve peace and quiet, and that certainly proved true during my time at the Holiday Inn Express in Sturgis, South Dakota. But I had few alternative options, for I needed to get to the Yellowstone area for a family reunion, and the best route took me straight through the Black Hills, which also marked the perfect halfway point on what would otherwise be a really long drive. I figured I'd make the most of it by staying a night in Sturgis, exploring the scenic beauty of the area, staying a second night and then heading out for Yellowstone.

Amazingly, I was able to book a room at the Holiday Inn Express in Sturgis. This was surprising, for I completed my booking only a month in advance, and besides this one room, pretty much everything else in the state of South Dakota was full. I was glad to have a place to sleep, but a little worried at the quality of any hotel that would have even a single vacant room during the motorcycle rally.

Turns out, I need not have worried. While my stay was by no means perfect, it was not nearly the disaster I expected. It may not have been one hundred percent quiet at the Holiday Inn Express, but it was quiet enough to ensure a decent night's sleep. In the morning, I was treated to coffee and a complimentary breakfast, as well as great instructions from the front desk staff in terms of the best sites to hit for someone only able to make a one-day trip out of the Black Hills. My second night at the Holiday Inn Express was similar -- not perfect, but not bad.

Pros: The Holiday Inn Express in Sturgis has very comfortable beds and pillows, as well as a wide range of cable programming. Visitors can enjoy access to an indoor pool and several arcade games. A continental breakfast is served every morning.

Cons: During the motorcycle rally, some outside noise should be expected. This may not be a problem the rest of the year. Additionally, I noticed a faint smell of cigarette smoke in what was supposed to be a non-smoking room.

Whenever I am travelling, I book my reservations through InterContinental Hotels & Resorts. The rooms are always impeccably clean and the service is excellent. I love being able to stay in a hotel close to my favorite attractions and restaurants. The InterContinental Hotels & Resorts chain is the only one I used when I am traveling for business or on vacations with my family. What I really like is the convenience of being able to book my hotel rooms online, and if I have any special requests, I can enter them on the website form and everything is handled for me. When we went to Tahiti last year, we booked reservations through InterContinental, and were very pleased with our accommodations. The all-inclusive concept is perfect for a family on a budget.

Like Vanessa, I stayed in the Athens Intercontinental Resort and fell in love with the place. The food was great, our room was immaculate and had a great view, and the staff made it really easy to figure out just where we should go to enjoy ourselves. They even helped arrange a tour for us. I've been planning another European vacation and when we finally go we'll be using these hotels again. They're really worth the money and will make your stay so much more enjoyable.

I agree with Bobby B about the InterContinental Hotel in Tahiti. My wife and I stayed there for an anniversary vacation and had a wonderful time at this retreat. Unlike so many hotels today where you feel like the staff is less than thrilled to be there, everyone we met was happy, polite, and helpful. Any time we needed advice on the best attractions or place to eat, someone was ready with a helpful answer. I would pay these prices again for the service alone. We had a great stay and I'd recommend it highly.

Looking at the other reviews it seems like the Intercontinental in Athens is amazing, so that's probably where I'll be going next. Personally, I've only tried the one in Montreal, Canada, but if it's any indication of what to expect then I'll keep using them wherever I go. You get a really amazing room, great service, and friendly staff. On the downside, it is a little bit expensive but let's face it – when you're staying in a hotel, that extra money really is worth it.

When my husband and I went to Greece for our honeymoon, we stayed at an Intercontinental Hotel Resort in Athens. This was a beautiful place and the hotel was very well maintained. The stay was a bit more expensive than what we had originally planned but in the end it was worth what we paid. Our room was very private and clean. The maid service respected our privacy as well and the only time that they showed up unannounced is when they delivered us a complementary bottle of champagne for our honeymoon.

I just read Nora Bentley’s review of Intercontinental in Athens and I kind of have to agree with her. Every time I go to Athens, I stay at the Intercontinental. The price is perfect and the view of the city at night is well worth the cost. The only issue is that it costs me a little extra to get to where I want to go because the hotel is so far from the rest of the center of town. I have never figured out if the extra cab fares make up for the lower room costs, but it doesn’t matter. It is a hotel that is well worth the money.
