The Polar Express G-Gauge:

The only thing that annoys me about the Lionel Online store is the fact that I wish there had been the internet when I was a kid to make the most of it – I thought I should get that off my chest first!

Anyway, back to the point at hand, it was inevitable that my son was going to become a huge fan of train sets, as I myself absolutely loved them when I was a kid and to some extent, that love never left me all along. I don’t collect them myself anymore, but I certainly help him to build his collection to the proud specimen it already is and to say I’m a little jealous wouldn’t be unfair! I really love it!

Most recently, I bought him The Polar Express - G Gauge as he loves the movie so much and had a birthday that demanded something special. And something special I very much got! He already has quite a few engines and what have you, but there is something really magical about this one that he and I both love – probably due to the role it played in the movie. It really does seem to be able to transport you to a different world of fantasy and adventure.

Back on planet Earth however, what you actually take home for your money is a supremely detailed and high quality recreation of the Polar Express that comes complete with three neat figures just to up the ante that bit further. It creates realistic train sounds and the front headlight is also the real deal, which for me makes the whole thing come together even more when playing with it in the dark.

Like everything else in the series it is remarkably easy to get up and running right out of the box, which also comes with its own circuit of track to add to your existing collection, or just run around in its own right. And the fact that The Polar Express - G Gauge runs on batteries is for me also a bonus as it means the freedom of not having to only ever use it close to power sockets.

It’s the kind of toy that I would defy anyone to have a go with and not be taken back to a different time of childlike innocence and wonder. It’s just got that kind of magical spark that you can’t quite put your finger on, but you both know it’s there. My wife did give me a little grief for not holding out until Christmas and I have to admit that given the theme it would have made the most incredible festive gift. But to be honest, it’s still a truly amazing gift at any time of the year for anyone!

The website is wonderful and is just exploding at the seams with the kind of things that used to fill my daydreams as a small boy. It’s a treasure trove of goodies like The Polar Express - G Gauge that you just know are going to mean the world to the lucky person you buy them for. And along with the huge range on offer, it’s also great to see that somehow everything is still mercifully cheap to buy. All in all, the website is a winner.

Pros: The craftsmanship is the biggest pro of all as this isn’t just some random imitation thrown together with no care or attention – it’s a painstakingly crafted replica the likes of which are few and far between in terms of quality and detail. It would be great even as a stand-alone model, but the fast that it’s also fully functional with lights and sounds just make it a truly wonderful little thing.

It’s also unusually robust which means it won’t be destined to explode after the first use, it’s simple to get it up and running from the box and I love the fact that it doesn’t need mains power to operate. I would have killed for this kind of thing when I was younger, so it’s good that I’m not getting to pretend I’m a kid again and play with it with my own son!

Cons: Aside from the slight touch of jealousy I can’t deny, there’s really nothing bad I can say about it!

Review Body: I have been a train collector for years; in fact I got my first train when I was about 8 years old and my uncle gave it to me. So, my son turns 8 this year and I have been looking for a train set to give him.

Knowing what I know about model trains, the description of this one looks to me like it will make perfect beginning for his train collection if he wishes to become a collector. You really can’t make a decision like that until you get your first train. If you really take care of your set and keep it in good condition then that is the mark of a good collector.

My basement is full of my train collection all with tracks on tables with a whole town involved as well as the countryside with farms and mail stops where the train gets the mail to take to another town. My big town has two churches, a school, about 50 homes and of course a train station. Since I have been collecting for close to 40 years, my collection has grown into quite an elaborate set up. I have made a section of one of my tables the place for my son’s new train.

I found it on the Lionel Stores website. It is a neat starter set. It is a replica of the Kansas City Southern Belle Freight with real Rail Sounds System added into the engine. The Kansas City Southern is black, red, and yellow and this deluxe freight outfit features a GP-38 dual-motored pulling a colorful lot of rolling cars. There is a generous FasTrack oval and a powerful CW-80 transformer all included in the set.

This set includes GP-38 Diesel engine, single dome tanker car, high-cube boxcar, 2 bay ACF hoppers, and a caboose. It has eight curved O-36 FasTrack sections, three straight sections, and one FasTrack terminal section with the transformer.

The locomotive contains the transformer control with neutral, reverse, and forward operation; RailSounds RTR sound system with diesel revving, bell, horn, and user-activated scenarios of crew dialog; real functioning headlight, dual operating couplers, powerful dual maintenance-free motors, and metal frame. It’s a really nice engine.

The rolling stock features couplers that really work, die-cast metal trucks on caboose, die-cast sprung trucks of metal (except for caboose), opening doors on the boxcar, interior lighting in the caboose, metal handrails on the ladders on tank car and the platform and each car in set is individually boxed, so my boy should have fun putting this all together. It almost looks like my first set.

It arrived last week, but I just had my wife wrap it up and it is now hidden in the attic. He has no idea this is what he is getting – I am so excited – I hope he loves trains as you can’t find a better hobby to be involved with.

Pros: Sturdy build, relatively inexpensive, in stock so shipped next day, almost a complete replica of this train. Nice oval track included with transformer. Fully functional train set just perfect for first train.

As I stated before – this is the perfect size for a starter train. It has many features that made the train more realistic. A new feature I have never seen before is the sound system in the engine. I have been a collector of Lionel trains for over 30 years now and have recently gotten back into the hobby as my grandchildren are coming over more often for visits. Though they like a lot of my older sets, I wanted to build something smaller that they could reach and play with when they are over.
