iRobot Roomba Cleaning Robots

If you ask me, there’s a big difference between being lazy and finding the smartest ways to take care of everyday household chores. Admittedly I exist right on the line and sometimes stray over the border, but I am nonetheless proud to be a fan of the iRobot range and support their labor-savings efforts.

You’ve probably already seen those carpet cleaning robots that basically do what you’re vacuum cleaner does – only without your supervision – but this time it’s the NEW! iRobot Looj® 330 I wanted to talk about. You don’t need to know the science behind the thing, but what you do need to know is that the NEW! iRobot Looj® 330 is a fully independent gutter-cleaning robot that you can send on its merry way to do the job you yourself have probably been dreading for months.

I’d say we have about 100 feet of guttering give or take a bit and although I admit I never timed myself previously, I can say for sure that the time this thing saved me is very well appreciated…and huge. Considering the job it does, it’s remarkably easy to get it up and running out of the box and doesn’t need any fiddly assembly or anything. The remote control is also as easy as pie to use and the speed of the thing in doing what would have taken me ages is quite unreal.

I’ve no idea how it works, but it senses the environment and the blockages/debris in order to act accordingly and do what’s needed to get things nice and clean. And while I haven’t gone so far as to follow the thing down the gutter and see how it does this close up, the results tell me that it really is a marvel of modern science.

Pros:
The main pro is as expected – it takes care of one of the jobs most would rather not bother with if they had any say in the matter. The NEW! iRobot Looj® 330 was so easy to get started with and hasn’t given me a lick of trouble since I bought it a few weeks ago. I’m sold!

I have no problems with this product. It is very useful.

Just take a look at the online video of how it works and I find it impossible to believe that anyone wouldn’t be impressed. And the more guttering you have all over the place, the bigger the impact this thing could make in a purely positive way.

The iRobot Scooba 230:

Am I completely bone idle? I’d say not. Do I like the thought of cleaning my house every single day from top to bottom though? Oh dear Lord no…really very much no! I hate it! I have so much respect for the so-called domestic Goddesses who manage to keep their house in show-home condition every day of the year, but to be honest; I have neither the time nor the inclination to achieve the same perfection. Instead, I’m the type who likes to look for sensible alternatives to work smarter rather than harder. You might call it cutting corners – I call it finding a better way!

And so we come onto the iRobot Scooba 230 – a little gadget that I have to admit is something I didn’t expect to be available until well after I leave this mortal coil. I mean seriously – you’re telling me we’ve already entered the era in which robots can clean your house and do it for cheap? The answer it seems is a yes, which I found out after giving my husband the third degree about the iRobot Scooba 230.

Basically, he saw one being demoed a couple of months ago and being the gadget nut that he is, he went nuts. He was however, sensible enough to run it by me before buying and I wasn’t too hot on the idea right away. I figured it was a fad, but I thought I might as well check out the iRobot store online – not affiliated with Apple, by the way – to see what all the fuss was about, and there they were – a load of little robots and gadgets to do the hard work for you. So, I bought one.

It’s a great site and is filled with some really interesting gadgets for home and garden cleaning. I liked the fact that I could pay using PayPal, as to be honest, I’m far more comfortable with it than I am sending my credit and debit card details out into the big blue yonder out there.

The iRobot Scooba 230 is only about 6-inches wide, which is perfect for our home, as while it’s not exactly big, it’s got a million and one annoying and hard to reach places that I myself very rarely bother with. It’s great on almost all types of hard flooring and according to the site, it kills a good 97% of bacteria – something I wouldn’t know how to measure but I’m sure it’s accurate!

It’s a pretty nifty little thing if you ask me and the very best, best thing of all is that you don’t need a degree in robotics to make it work. Quite to the contrary in fact, it’s pretty much ready to go right out of the box and has instructions in real English that were written for real-life people, which makes a nice change for me. It gets round the whole of our home in about 45-minutes – the longer of the two cycles – and is frankly a joy to watch while doing its thing.

I can say for sure that it’s converted me to the robot way of life, and I’m now wondering what exactly else I can bring in to take over the rest of the jobs I cannot stand doing…of which there is a pretty long list!

Pros: Like I mentioned, aside from the fact that it gives me more time to divert elsewhere or just be lazy, I like the fact that it really could not be easier to use. It seems to know exactly what you need and how to give it to you, which means that you yourself don’t have to wrestle with it for hours on end to try and get it working. It’s quite remarkably effective too and considering the price I paid for the number of hours it has already saved me, I reckon even doubles the price would have still been a winner!

Cons: The only con to mention is the fact that it has made me question what else I can bring in a machine to do – I might just end up spending a fortune on various gadgets to do the dirty work for me at this rate!

Vacuum Cleaning iRobot Model 535:

I purchased the iRobot, model 535, to have a vacuum that would clean the floor with no effort on my part to save time. This vacuum cleans is a variety of ways as it has its own intelligence, which efficiently cleans the entire carpet.

One way the vacuum cleans is by following the walls, then navigating around furniture or any obstacle until the entire room is clean. The Roomba will also clean by crisscrossing the room, and it doesn’t miss any areas. In addition, the Roomba automatically calculates the size of the room and adjusts its cleaning time accordingly.

It has a blue light that indicates the dirt detector light is on, which causes the Roomba to clean more intensely in an area with more dirt. Spot removal is another nice feature as the vacuum will work in a spiral pattern of approximately three feet in diameter to intensely clean that area.

I have found that if I clear away any obstacles the vacuum will clean my living and dining room in approximately 45 to 50 minutes. There is a side brush that will catch the dirt that is next to the edge of the walls. I use my Roomba for all my floors, which includes carpeting, wood and linoleum floors.

I have also purchased two Virtual Wall Lighthouses that guide the Roomba, and the vacuuming will be completed in the area I desire in a shorter time frame. The Roomba will clean one room, then, pass the lighthouse to clean the second room. Next, it will come back past the lighthouse and return to its home base. The virtual Wall Lighthouse can also be set to use an invisible barrier that the Roomba will not cross.

In addition, there is a wireless remote command that will allow you to direct the Roomba in whatever direction you choose. It let you turn the Roomba on and off, plus you can schedule the Roomba to clean at a specific time. You can have the Roomba return to the base to begin the re-charging process.

The Roomba works best if it is allowed to have a full 16 hour charge. It is a good idea to keep the base plugged in at all times. The battery will last longer when it is allowed to fully charge between cleanings.

The filter and brushes must be cleaned at least every three cleanings. I have found that is the carpet has more dirt that cleaning more often is useful.

Pros: The Roomba is very easy to use and requires little effort. It cleans each room thoroughly, and it is very useful to clean those spots that need extra cleaning.

Cons: Cleaning the Roomba is a bit of trouble, and it takes some time to clean the brushes. It is still necessary to have a regular vacuum for cleaning upholstery.

Review Body: I live in a small apartment with only 2 bathrooms and a kitchen floor that need moping. I hate to mop and would almost do anything to keep from moping. So, 6 months ago when I found the iRobot Scooba 230 on the internet, I could not order it fast enough.

This is the robot that washes floors and that is advertised to clean tight and those hard-to-reach spaces in kitchens and bathrooms, especially the areas behind and around the toilet. This robot washes linoleum or tile or sealed hardwood floors using a 3-stage cleaning process that kills about 97% of the most common bacteria in the household. The floor needs swept first before using Scooba 230. This robot comes with Essentials Kit that includes an extra virtual wall and extra bottom plates as well as 4 packets of Natural Enzyme Floor cleaner.

Well, I couldn’t be happier – I love it – it works great at least in my small kitchen and bathrooms. Before using it the very first time, I did mop the three floors thoroughly. That was about 6 months ago and I haven’t had to do much myself – the Scooba 230 has worked great.

Scooba seems to be working great with its core technologies working as they are supposed to. Scooba uses a three-stage cleaning procedure to wash, then scrub, and then squeegee vacuum up the dirty water, a sequence that kills almost 97% of the most common household bacteria. The brushes scrubs and loosen dirt, grime and stains while the squeegee-vacuum technology picks up almost all the water that is dirty, leaving only clean behind. This works well with Scooba Natural Enzyme Formula floor cleaner or regular tap water.

There are some things I have learned to make for more efficient operation. Cleaning the floor before using the robot the first time is important, sweeping the floors before cleaning is vital and cleaning the unit after each use probably makes the unit work better.

I hope that this unit continues to work this well. If I never have to mop another floor it would be too soon. It works well after it has done the floor 3 to 4 times – this is especially true around the toilet areas.

Now if someone would just invent a robot to change the sheets on the beds – I would be a very happy woman.

Pros: Ease in use, easy to install, increases performance the more times it is used, great engineering, it is almost perfect maintenance robot, short cleaning cycle option which allows you to do two short cleanings on a charge or 1 long cleaning, small enough to clean bathrooms well and sanitizing them when using the enzyme solution, wall following feature works great and is great for staying close around the toilet and other fixtures in the bathroom. Cleans great with only plain tap water, the modular design puts all components for cleaning in 1 replaceable and removable bottom place; easy to clean and replace wheels; and both tanks are easy to fill as well as empty.

Website Experience: This is a very clearly designed and navigable website with a lot of white space and no clutter. Uses several different ways of hiding the menu bars and also uses several different ways of navigation. There are some interesting design features that I haven’t seen on any other websites – unique. It is also amazing to see how far we have come with robotic technology. Uses video technology to show all products working and also offers a training feature. Final Notes: I really believe that with these robotic type machines, how you care for them before and after cleaning is very important. Any machine is going to have problems with an extremely filthy floor and when it finishes that filthy floor, it certainly needs to be cleaned thoroughly before it is stored away.
